Q&A

Q: How do dreams tie into The Hero’s Journey?

A: Dreams have been at the center of my work for the past twenty years. I had the godmother of realizations when I understood the hero’s journey is not just a model for empowering our waking lives, but one that maps the transformational potential of dreamwork. I could suddenly see how every symbol that shows up in our dreams is a neon sign pointing out what stage of the hero’s journey we are in. For example:

  • Dreams of deep water tend to relate to the belly of the whale.
  • Trying to answer or make a phone call can be symbolic of a call to adventure.
  • Rushing in late to an exam ties into the road of trials.
  • Receiving recognition, such as a raise or award, often represents the reward stage.

The hero’s journey adds an essential filter through which we can decode dreams, and our dreams reciprocate by revealing where we are on our hero’s journey.

This discovery was a revelation for me, because in one fell swoop, dreams and the hero’s journey, two modalities that have meant so much to me, suddenly came together like pieces of a glorious jigsaw puzzle.

Q: What do dreams and The Hero’s Journey have in common?

A: Regardless of race, politics, age, gender, or religion, we dream every night, and there is a hero in all of us. Dreamwork and the hero’s journey are equal opportunity frameworks for anyone with a pulse. They both awaken us to a more empowered life. Here are a few more fundamentals that dreams and the hero’s journey have in common.

They are both:
• woven into our deep unconscious
• spoken in symbolic language
• meeting us on a soul-ular level
• making sense of our challenges
• transforming us from victims to victors
• testing us, teaching us, guiding us, helping us, healing us, revealing our next steps
• supporting our process of becoming awakened human beings
• requiring our conscious attention
• delivering us back home to the ordinary world, with an elixir to share with others.

Q: What can I expect to get from working with The Hero’s Journey Dream Oracle cards?

This deck combines elements of Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey with dream symbols and wisdom to:

Springboard your intuition
• Illuminate your ability to interpret your nighttime dreams • Amplify your higher guidance
• Awaken your wisdom
• Activate boldness and heroism in your waking life

Q: The Hero’s Journey outlines twelve stages of a noble path. What if I am halfway through my hero’s journey but I pick a card that relates to an earlier stage? Or if I am at the onset of my hero’s journey, but I pick a card that relates to the completion?

A: For ease in presenting the hero’s journey, it is expressed in a linear fashion. However, the reality of the hero’s journey is that it is non-linear and overlapping. This means there are blurred lines between the stages. For example, even if we are near the finale of the hero’s journey we’re currently on, having a beginner’s mind will always serve us well. Additionally, even if we are at the onset of our journey, there is a knower within us who, to some degree, is already wise, aware of the outcome, and may send us dreams that feature a preview of coming attractions.

Q: How can The Hero’s Journey Dream Oracle help me understand my dreams?

A: The hero’s journey, just like dreams, speaks the language of symbols. When you become immersed in understanding how symbols are speaking to you (whether by day or by night) you will become more fluent in the language of your dreams. Here’s a hint: Pay attention to the metaphors you use when speaking in your waking life. Also, notice your association with certain events in your waking life. For example, if you are in a hurry to get to

a business meeting and you run into nothing but red lights on your way, you might want to think twice before sealing the deal. Or conversely, if you easily find a parking spot right next to your desired destination, this might be a sign you are on the right track, or that the universe is on your side.

Q: How do dreams tie into the hero’s journey?

A: Dreams take place within the ‘special world’ where the rules of the ordinary world are turned upside down. This is exactly how it is in the hero’s journey—the rules of the world we enter when we cross the threshold to adventure or dreaming can seem so very different to those of the mundane world we occupy in our typical lives. There is a correlation between each stage of the hero’s journey and the important elements of sleep and dreamwork, as you will discover as you play/engage with the cards.

Q: Are there any good or bad cards?

A: All the cards are good, important, and valuable, which is true for every dream, and every stage of the hero’s journey. That doesn’t mean your ego won’t judge certain cards as being more fortuitous than others. But, the truth is, each card (along with every dream and stage of the hero’s journey) comes with its challenges and blessings. The determining factor in whether you get a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ reading is in your ability to honor, and thus enjoy each step of the journey, not just the destination. Remember, what you do with the cards you draw (i.e. how you interpret them) makes all the difference.

Q: How can I work with the images?

A: The images, gorgeously created by master fusion artist Rassouli, speak volumes. When you meditate upon the image of your card, pay attention to any part of it that stands out to you, as well as to how it makes you feel. Rassouli’s art is multi-layered, textured, and within each image there are many worlds for you to discover and interpret as personal messages in your readings. If a picture says a thousand words, Rassouli’s paintings are the equivalent of a thousand pictures and potentially communicate thousands upon thousands of words!

“This woman is truly dreamy.”
~Ricki Lake

“I got the job!!!  I don’t think I would’ve had the courage or confidence to move forward in the manner in which I did if I had not joined the Shero group from the beginning.  I am not sure I can totally express the impact Kelly has had on my life but I can tell you that it is dramatic, tangible and amazing.
I know it sounds silly to say I was not confident before….of course on some level I have been.  But I believe I have been transformed and I am a much richer, deeper, calmer, more lovely version of myself than I have ever been and it feels AWESOME.  I am making choices and decisions which I would have struggled so hard for in the past.  Now, while there are challenges I don’t feel overwhelmed, stressed or worried. I am just moving through what life throws at me and gently picking my path…..and it is so the right path.  How can I tell — because it lights up before me like the yellow brick road, and there is sunshine and music guiding my way.  What kind of miracle is that??????  It’s a Kelly miracle, that’s what!!!”

~Somer Cooper, Blogger, Advocate to End Domestic Violence

“Kelly teaches us that dreams transcend the usual human barriers of social status, wealth, profession, and ego identities. When we address the mystery of dreams, we do so at a basic level of humanity…a level that is both common and yet transcendent. People lay out the incomprehensible elements of their dreams, like beads of a broken necklace scattering on a tabletop. Kelly’s work is the invisible thread that connects the elements to make the mystery a comprehensible whole. With her guidance, I’ve learned to produce enlightenment from confusion.”
~Jordan Lederer, Certified Dream-Life Coach

“I have grown and changed immensely through working with Kelly. This process has allowed me to connect with my higher self and tap into a source of unconditional love—a love that I wasn’t giving to myself before this journey. Through working with Kelly I have become more confident, I have let go of stress and worry, I am more expressive, I feel more attractive and light.”
~Jeannie Robinson, – Certified Dream-Life Coach

25 Things Most People Don’t Know About Kelly…

    1. My childhood nickname was Smelly Kelly with a Big Belly full of Jelly…the abbreviated version is simply, “Smelly.” My little sister called me “Cow” and I called myself “Lolly”. To this day if a family member or close friend calls me by “Kelly” I think something’s wrong.
    2. I have four sisters that I love with all my heart. Growing up, my sister Shannon and I not only shared a bedroom, but we often shared dreams.
    3. The first dream I recall included me being chased by a witch around the turrets of a scary castle.
    4. My first love was Elvis…I literally dreamed about marrying him when I was five years old…and telling him that Pricilla would have to go!
    5. The first poem I ever memorized and recited was in 3rd grade, and it went like this: “The Optimist and the pessimist…the difference is a droll. The optimist sees the doughnut, the pessimist sees the hole.” Without knowing it that poem laid the foundation for the way, as an adult, I roll.
    6. When I was thirteen I used to wear a comb in my back pocket of my skin tight Chemendefers that said, “If you can read this you are too close.”
    7. I got a ‘D’ in my 7th grade cooking class….it scared me for life!
    8. In high school I was a cheerleader and was voted “Most Spirited” by my senior class…GO TEAM!!! To this day, when I get inspired by someone or something, my inner cheerleader takes over…and it can be quite obnoxious.
    9. I have a blue belt in Tae Kwon Do (and I’ve used it to save my life 3 times—thank you mom for insisting I learn it!)
    10. My first college semester was in Seville, Spain…where I lived with a Spanish family, traveled throughout Europe, and managed to learn to speak conversational Spanish—thanks to then boyfriend, Jose Maria Luis. I still speak and understand Spanish to this day (with a slight lisp.)
    11. At 21 years old I was crowned “Miss Public Nuisance” as a publicity stunt for a Beverly Hills Art Gallery …it landed me on Hard Copy and an episode of Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous (not because I was rich or famous, but my boss was.)
    12. I taught English in Japan…and learned to speak a little Japanese while I was there…beyond the typical, “Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto.”
    13. I was a back up dancer for Stacy Q (remember “2 of Hearts”?)
    14. Throughout my 20s I was an actress…and my first leading role was in a horror film called, “Death By Dialogue” …and NO, I didn’t talk everyone to death…but I do that in real life!
    15. I played the role of the girl in the t-bird that provoked the song “Fun, fun, fun, till daddy takes the t-bird away” in a TV movie of the week about the Beach Boys.
    16. I was in a singing group called “Zuzu’s Petals”—the name was inspired by the movie, “It’s A Wonderful Life.”
    17. Still to this day I have slumber parties several times a year with my BFFs from high school—Theresa, Shawndara, D’ona, and Nancy. You can’t say I haven’t fully embraced my inner teenager!
    18. I got married to my beloved, Dana, in our backyard meadow in Topanga, CA, surrounded by a bevy of Goddesses…it was the most magnificent day of my life.
    19. I once went on a shopping spree at Bed, Bath & Beyond for bed and bath accessories for the Dali Lama.
    20. I had a near-death experience…I went to the other side…and came back (obviously)…and quite literally saw the light—words cannot describe the beauty of the experience and the freedom of knowing that I have a body, but I am not my body…so much more.
    21. I am the creator/founder of the most amazing program (The Dream Project) that inspires kids to discover solutions for the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. I get to work with the most inspiring young people who remind me that they aren’t our future…they are our NOW!
    22. I had the mind-boggling honor of speaking about the Dream Project at the United Nations in Paris, France.
    23. I’m an acronym freak and I use them for just about everything, for example: How to get the most from your D.R.E.A.M.S.; how to over come any F.E.A.R.; how to interpret your dreams via the S.A.D.D.L.E. formula, and how to spot the BI.D.s in life (blessings in disguise)!
    24. For my 20th high school reunion I was named the person with the “Most Unusual Career.” I guess that’s what happens when you become a Hypnotherapist/Dream Coach/Author who people refer to as “Doctor Dream”!

    And…

    25. Along those lines, after being asked repeatedly how I do what I do for a living, I decided to lay it out for people, and pay it forward to those who are interested in following my very bizarre footprints. In these precarious financial times, people are looking for out-of-the-box ways to earn a living in a way that honors their soul…so I launched Dream-Life Coach Training to empower people to become Dream-Life Coaches. It’s not a career path for everyone, I must say, but it appeals to those who have an interest in nighttime dream work, and who genuinely desire to learn and earn the tools to support people in living the life of their dreams.
